La société urbaine des Pays-Bas méridionaux a développé, au bas Moyen Âge, une culture politique profondément originale. Son importance dans l’histoire européenne et son rayonnement dans les espaces densément urbanisés du Continent sont inversement proportionnels à la méconnaissance persistante dont elle fait l’objet dans l’érudition francophone. Il est vrai que la dernière vision globale qui en a été donnée en français est celle d’Henri Pirenne. En dialogue avec ce grand prédécesseur, Marc Boone montre le rôle central tenu par les élites corporatives dans la construction des identités urbaines. Il compare ses observations avec celles d’une vaste historiographie urbaine européenne. En résulte un ouvrage personnel et neuf par ses interprétations et ses angles d’attaque mais aussi une précieuse synthèse des avancées récentes en histoire urbaine des Pays-Bas. Celles-ci sont, pour l’essentiel, contenues dans des articles en langue néerlandaise, peu accessible à un large lectorat international.
