Before her nomination as Director of the Institute for European Studies (IEE) in 2014, she served as Deputy Director of the Centre d'étude de la vie politique (CEVIPOL). She received her PhD in political science from the ULB and she was post-doctoral fellow at the University of Bologna in 2008. Her research interests relate to Europeanization, European integration, and judicial reforms. Her work has been published in peer-reviewed journals including the<em> Journal of Contemporary European Studies</em>, the <em>Journal of European Integration, Perspective on European Politics and Societies</em>, <em>Revue française de science politique</em>, and <em>Politique européenne.</em></p> 2 B01 Christian Olsson Olsson, Christian Christian Olsson <p>Christian Olsson is professor of political science (international relations) at the Université libre de Bruxelles and director of its research centre in International Relations. Olsson is a specialist of critical war studies and his empirical research focuses on the Arab world and the wider MENA region. He is the co-editor, with Mathias Delori, of <em>The French War on Terror: A Relational approach to Counter-Terrorism</em> (2025, Routledge).</p> 1 01 eng 26 1 01 <p>Does change occur by importing ideas and insights from neighbouring disciplines, by challenging disciplinary boundaries, or through incursions into political science made by scholars from more or less proximate disciplinary fields?</p> <p>Sitting on the Shoulders of Giants explores how intellectual innovation happens in political science; how new ideas emerge; how novel concepts and methods are introduced and validated in the discipline. It focuses on the intellectual contributions of ten influential authors, including Carl Schmitt, Karl Polanyi, Antonio Gramsci, Erving Goffman, Peter L. Berger, Barbara Geddes, Judith Butler, Andrew Moravcsik and Mark Blyth.</p> <p>While recognizing the role of agency and contingency, the book draws on the heuristic concepts of layering, displacement, and conversion to highlight the path-dependency of change in political science. How are new ideas produced? How are they validated and rewarded? Do disciplines evolve primarily through internal developments or through external contributions? Through gradual evolutions or revolutions? 43 The "Science Politique/Political Science" series at the Éditions de l'Université de Bruxelles publishes works in internal political science, sociology of politics, and comparative politics. 43 La collection « Science politique » aux Éditions de l'Université de Bruxelles publie des travaux de science politique interne, de sociologie du politique et de politique comparée. 44 <p>Without being exclusive, its field of publication can be subdivided into three main general areas. The aim is to bring to the public's attention work relating to political and public life in three complementary dimensions: the actors, the acts, and the (public) action.</p> <p>ACTORS By 'actors' we mean the institutions of contemporary political regimes and the organizations that work therein: political parties, trade unions, associations, and pressure groups.</p> <p>ACTS This axis covers all studies relating to political participation in a broad sense: the electoral phenomenon and the recomposition of political and social landscapes. Other forms of political and social participation are also analysed: spontaneous mobilisations, organised militancy, social movements, forms of action, their symbolic dimensions, their effects, as well as the attitudes that are situated at the root of these modes of political and social participation.</p> <p>PUBLIC ACTION This third axis covers publications related to decision-making processes and public policy formation: political agenda-setting, stakeholder mobilization, negotiation and decision-making processes, implementation and evaluation. The ambition here is to deepen knowledge on the political actors, representations and behaviours of the two previous axes with an analysis of institutional facts, their evolution, and their influence on political life.</p> 44 <p>Sans être exclusif, son champ de publication peut être subdivisé en trois grands axes généraux. Il s'agit en fait de porter à la connaissance du public les travaux relatifs à la vie politique et publique sous trois dimensions complémentaires : l'acteur, l'acte et l'action.</p> <p>Les acteurs. Par acteurs, nous entendons les institutions des régimes politiques contemporains et les organisations qui y œuvrent : partis politiques, syndicats, associations et groupes de pression.</p> <p>L'acte.Cet axe recouvre toutes les études relatives à la participation politique au sens large : phénomène électoral et recomposition des paysages politiques et sociaux. Sont aussi analysées les autres formes de participation politique et sociale : les mobilisations spontanées, la militance organisée, les mouvements sociaux., les formes de l'action, leurs dimensions symboliques, leurs effets et les attitudes qui sont au fondement de ces modes de participation politique et sociale.</p> <p>L'action publique. Ce troisième axe couvre les publications relatives aux processus décisionnels et à la formation des politiques publiques : formation de l'agenda politique, mobilisation des acteurs, processus de négociation et de décision, mise en œuvre et évaluation.
